Win the Morning

“Win the morning, win the day.”  Have you heard that saying? Wise.

Today I got up early, read my Bible, wrote in my journal.  Then I headed out on a jog in the nearby Foothills. The birds and I greeted the sun as it peeked over the horizon.  Other runners, and plenty of mountain bikers, were out taking advantage of such a fine morning. I was happily jammin’ on my Spotify playlist, “Morning Songs,” which is part cheesy, part Broadway, part groovin’. And 100% increases my happiness when I listen to it.

Back home, I showered, drank green tea (bonus points), ate a healthy breakfast, got the laundry going, swept the house, calendared some stuff, read a chapter in my book, and set myself to the task of processing household paperwork.

9:30, and I had already won the day.

Seriously.

If I get going too much later in the morning, I already feel like I’m behind, and rarely do I catch up. Certainly I’ll have a hard time exercising if I put it off. So many things – all seemingly important – compete for my time.

But mornings done well set us on a happy path for the day. There’s something about that early momentum that fuels productivity and positive feelings of accomplishment.

What does a good morning look like for you? I’d love to hear!

  1. Oh, I am envious of your morning route. I am just not a morning person. I have every intention of rising early, yoga, meditation etc. but no, snooze, snooze, snooze. Maybe one day when I am not ruled by the calendar and the clock.

    Keep inspiring us Julie!

    1. Thanks for weighing in on this. Early mornings may not be your jam. That’s okay. Your morning routine may not look like someone else’s. But what is important is to sit down and look at what YOU want out of a morning, like: yoga, meditation. Can you get up just 15 minutes earlier to add in one of these? 15 minutes of yoga might start your day out in an amazing way! Focus on just adding one, yummy, self-nourishing thing, not all the things. Make sense? A morning routine is FOR you. It is meant to make life better for you. This isn’t a burdensome thing. But if you want it, you can make it happen. I think the blessing would be worth the effort. Just start small, and don’t sweat it if you’re not consistent at first. Be gentle with your lovely self.
